Domme

Member of Les Plus Beaux Villages de France

Philip the Bold founded Domme in 1281 as a royal bastide with the right to mint coins. The cliff it stands on rises more than a hundred metres above a great loop of the Dordogne, so its walls trace a trapezium instead of the usual grid. Knights Templar held prisoner here from 1307 left hundreds of graffiti, and in 1588 Protestants took the town by climbing the cliff at night.

Highlights

  • The Porte des Tours, flanked by two drum towers
  • Templar graffiti left by knights imprisoned from 1307
  • Views over the Cingle de Montfort meander of the Dordogne
  • Place de la Halle and the turreted Maison du Gouverneur
  • The GR 64 long-distance footpath across the commune
