Bassano in Teverina

In November 1943 a German munitions train blew up at the station below, tearing roofs and walls off this old village on a tuff spur above the Tiber valley and leaving it empty for decades. Public projects have since restored homes and shored up the cliff. Down near the river lies Lake Vadimo, sacred to the Etruscans and once said by Latin writers to carry floating islands.
