Bishop Conrad of Trento founded Egna, Neumarkt in German, as a market town in 1189, and when the Counts of Tyrol later spent their money in Bolzano they left its old face almost untouched. Shops still open under the arcades of the main street, lined with deep hall houses and projecting bay windows. Long before, the Roman post station of Endidae stood here on the Via Claudia Augusta.
