Perched above the San Lorenzo valley in the hills of the western Riviera, this hamlet of Cipressa has kept its medieval layout almost intact. Tall houses pressed together along the cliff edge served as its defensive wall, and covered passages and arches link the narrow carruggi. At the far end stands San Pietro, a 13th-century church turned into a fortress during the Barbary raids.
