Seen from above, Lucignano is an ellipse: its lanes ring a hilltop 400 metres up in the Valdichiana, inside walls the Sienese built in 1371. Fought over for centuries by Arezzo, Siena, Perugia and Florence, it kept the look of a late-medieval town. Its prize is the Albero d'oro, a gilded reliquary tree with coral sprigs, now in the museum in the Palazzo Pretorio.

Highlights

  • The Albero d'oro, a 2.6-metre gilded reliquary tree begun in 1350
  • San Francesco, a Gothic church with a fresco of the Triumph of Death
  • Collegiata di San Michele Arcangelo, with a marble altar by Andrea Pozzo
  • Santuario della Madonna della Querce outside the walls, attributed to Vasari
  • Setting of Abbas Kiarostami's 2010 film Certified Copy
