The Malatesta fortress here is so tall it was nicknamed a medieval skyscraper, and from its roof terrace the whole Romagna Riviera opens out, from Cattolica to Ravenna. The village below sits in the hills behind Rimini, rich in chestnuts: every Sunday in October the chestnut festival brings roast chestnuts, music and wine poured from the village fountain.

Highlights

  • Rocca Malatestiana, with Renaissance-furnished rooms and a terrace over the Riviera
  • Costumed Good Friday procession with Roman soldiers and hooded confraternities
  • Rocca di Luna, three days of shows in July's full-moon week
  • Passatelli in meat broth, and roast chestnuts with new wine
  • Santuario della Madonna di Bonora, with a 15th-century nursing Madonna
