Penne
Member of I Borghi più belli d'Italia
Exposed brick, in houses, churches and old paving alike, earned Penne its nickname of 'town of bricks'. Once the capital of the Italic Vestini, it spreads over four hills between the Tavo and Fino valleys, halfway between the Adriatic and the Gran Sasso. Its cathedral of San Massimo, rebuilt after 1944 bombing, keeps its medieval crypt.
