Pietracamela
Member of I Borghi più belli d'Italia
Pietracamela clings to the north side of the Gran Sasso beneath a great boulder, its tall stone houses built mostly in the 15th and 16th centuries. Stepped lanes, small balconies and lintels carved with coats of arms fill the compact centre, which looks over the Rio Arno valley. Above it rise the ski slopes of Prati di Tivo and the Corno Grande, where Apennine chamois were reintroduced in 1992.
