This mountain town gave its name to amatriciana, the pasta sauce now cooked all over Italy. Amatrice stands at 955 metres in a high basin of the upper Tronto valley, beneath the Monti della Laga, and the earthquake of 24 August 2016 destroyed most of its historic centre. Around it, inside a national park, beech woods and high meadows climb towards waterfalls and Lazio's highest peak.
