Pitigliano

Houses rise straight from the edge of a great spur of tuff, with cave-riddled ravines on three sides and the Lente, Meleta and Prochio flowing below. Ruled by the Orsini for centuries, Pitigliano took in Jews fleeing persecution from the 16th century and became known as Little Jerusalem; its synagogue of 1598 and the old Jewish quarter have been restored and are open to visitors.
