In 1617 the Portuguese merchant Miguel Vaaz de Andrade rebuilt the old hamlet as the Casale di San Michele, and its streets still follow a regular north–south plan with no medieval layers. The town lies on the Murge plateau south of Bari and is known for its carnival and for zampina, a local sausage celebrated each September. The castle houses a museum of farming life.

Highlights

  • Sagra della Zampina on the last weekend of September
  • The castle's museum of 19th-century farming life
  • Chiesa della Maddalena, beside the castle, with 18th-century frescoes
  • Focaccia al libro, Ferrovia cherries and Primitivo wine
  • The town's carnival
