San Benedetto Po
Member of I Borghi più belli d'Italia
Life here has always revolved around the Polirone Abbey, founded in 1007 by Tedaldo di Canossa, whose monks drained and farmed the land between the Po and the old Lirone. Matilda of Canossa chose to be buried here, and under the Gonzaga Giulio Romano worked on the great basilica. Today visitors come for the monastery, the civic museum and dishes such as pumpkin tortelli and torta di tagliatelle.
