The philosopher Tommaso Campanella was born in this town at the foot of Monte Consolino, in the Stilaro valley of southern Calabria. Its prize is the Cattolica, a Byzantine church laid out as a Greek cross in a square, with four columns and five domes. The town also keeps a Norman castle and many churches, and its territory runs from fir and beech forest down to the Ionian Sea.
