Pilgrims bound for Santiago de Compostela gave Ainhoa its start: the village grew as a halt on the way, its white houses strung along one main street a few kilometres from the Spanish border. Rebuilt after destruction in the 17th century, it keeps only two older survivors, the church and the Machitorénéa house. Inside the church, wooden galleries follow the Basque custom.

Highlights

  • Église Notre-Dame-de-l'Assomption, with Basque wooden galleries
  • The Basque cemetery beside the main street
  • Chapelle Notre-Dame de l'Aubépine, a rural chapel outside the village
  • Maison du Patrimoine, a small heritage museum in the tourist office
