Colmars
Member of Les Plus Beaux Villages de France
The Romans are said to have dedicated a hill here to Mars, and the name Colmars grew from it. The present village stands at around 1,230 metres where the Lance joins the young Verdon, after an earlier, cramped hilltop site was abandoned and then destroyed in 1390. It was raided again in the Wars of Religion; today the surrounding peaks, lakes and waterfalls draw walkers.
Highlights
- The Verdon flowing past the foot of the village, close to its source
- Lac de l'Encombrette, in a glacial cirque below the peaks
- The protected waterfall on the Lance stream
- The Chaumie waterfall on the slopes of the Autapie
