Arkose, a warm blond stone once quarried here, gives Montpeyroux its colour and its Occitan name, "stony hill". A 13th-century keep rises above this small hilltop village, south of Clermont-Ferrand above the Allier valley. The same stone was used for several Romanesque churches along the Allier, including the abbey church at Issoire.
