Sainte-Agnès
Member of Les Plus Beaux Villages de France
Some 800 metres above the bay of Menton, Sainte-Agnès calls itself the highest coastal village in Europe, and the road up gives views over Roquebrune-Cap-Martin, Menton and on to Italy. Its fortress, long disputed between Ventimiglia, Provence, Savoy and even the Grimaldi, was razed under Louis XIV. Below the village, a Maginot Line fort dug into the rock in the 1930s is now a museum.
