Legend says Énimie, a Merovingian princess, was cured of leprosy in the waters here and stayed to found a convent. A Benedictine monastery followed in 951 and drew pilgrims; its chapter house and chapel still stand. The village climbs the side of the Causse de Sauveterre above the Tarn, deep in its gorges, with troglodyte hamlets such as Castelbouc further along the river.
