Acerenza
Member of I Borghi più belli d'Italia
Set on a steep-sided plateau between the Bradano and the Fiumarella at over 800 metres, Acerenza was a fortress already known to Livy and Horace, and Goths, Lombards, Byzantines and Normans all fought over it. It has been a bishop's seat since at least 499, and its great monument is the Romanesque-Gothic cathedral begun in 1080.
