Horace was born in 65 BC in Roman Venusia, a colony on the Via Appia, and the town still points out his supposed house. Later it held a large Jewish community with its own catacombs, and the composer prince Carlo Gesualdo made its 1470 castle a residence. That square castle with round corner towers now houses the national archaeological museum.
