Compiano
Member of I Borghi più belli d'Italia
For about 425 years the Landi family ruled the upper Taro valley from here, and their mighty castle still sits atop the fully walled village. Compiano minted its own coins and later turned its fortress into a state prison, then a girls' boarding school. Today the castle's furnished rooms, left to the town by Marchesa Lina Raimondi Gambarotta, form a museum.
Highlights
- Castello di Compiano, with tapestries, paintings and the Landi coat of arms
- A Masonic museum housed in three of the castle's rooms
- Fungo di Borgotaro, the protected local porcini mushroom (IT)
- Artisans' workshops open and concerts in the castle each August
