Its name comes from the rubble it was built with: in the 11th century the castle and old core were raised from the ruins of Pitinum Pisaurense, a Roman timber town destroyed by the Ostrogoths. The castle stands on a rise above the Apsa torrent in the Montefeltro hills, with the later town spread over the flat ground below. In the Middle Ages it was a Malatesta enclave.
