Maruggio
Member of I Borghi più belli d'Italia
Much of Maruggio's old centre was built by the Knights of Malta, who held the village from 1317 to 1819. It lies in a shallow hollow at the foot of the low Murge tarantine, two kilometres from the Ionian Sea, surrounded by olive groves and Primitivo vineyards. Its coastal hamlet, Campomarino, has sandy beaches backed by dunes up to 12 metres high.
