Morano Calabro
Member of I Borghi più belli d'Italia
Travellers have long been struck by Morano's shape: a cone of white houses tumbling down a hillside below its castle, which Norman Douglas likened to a waterfall and Escher drew in 1930. One of the main towns of the Pollino National Park, it controls the Campotenese pass between Calabria and Basilicata, and its maze of lanes still shows three circuits of walls.
