Nemi
Member of I Borghi più belli d'Italia
Its name comes from the Latin nemus, the sacred grove where Romans worshipped Diana on the shore of the crater lake below. The village sits on the rim beneath Castello Ruspoli and is known for small, sweet wild strawberries grown on the sheltered volcanic slopes. Down by the water, a museum holds the remains of Caligula's great ships, raised from the lake in 1929 to 1932 and burnt in 1944.
