Inside its walls on a bend of the Livenza, a river diverted in 1911, Portobuffolé thrived as a river port and trading town, and Venice granted it the title of city. In the 14th century Gaia da Camino, named by Dante in the Purgatorio, gathered a court of artists and scholars here; her supposed house is now a cycling museum.

Highlights

  • The 28-metre civic tower, last of the castle's seven, now a rural life museum
  • The Monte di Pietà, with a rare fierce Venetian lion holding a closed book
  • Porta Friuli, reached by a bridge of 1780 that replaced the drawbridge
  • The Duomo, said by tradition to have been the town's synagogue
  • Villa Giustinian of 1695, frescoed rooms and a park with statues
