Almagro
Member of Los Pueblos más Bonitos de España
Named for the local red clay, Almagro rose as the seat of the Order of Calatrava and later drew German agents of the Fugger bankers. Its long Plaza Mayor is lined with columns and green-framed glazed galleries, and nearby stands the Corral de Comedias of 1628, the only theatre of its kind kept intact and still in use. A classical theatre festival has run here every year since 1978.
