Alquézar
Member of Los Pueblos más Bonitos de España
On a limestone outcrop above the last canyon of the Río Vero, Alquézar grew up around a castle and the collegiate church of Santa María, consecrated in 1099. Its name comes from the Arabic for fortress, and the stronghold once guarded nearby Barbastro. Today it is Aragon's main starting point for canyoning, vultures nest on the canyon walls, and dozens of nearby caves hold prehistoric paintings.
