Olivenza
Member of Los Pueblos más Bonitos de España
For five centuries, until 1801, Olivenza belonged to Portugal, and Portugal still formally claims it. The Portuguese stamp is plain to see: a Manueline doorway on the town hall, the church of Santa María Magdalena and a 36-metre castle keep that was once the tallest in Portugal. Locals call themselves children of Spain and grandchildren of Portugal, and the town's traditional sweet is técula mécula, an almond tart.
