La Roche-Guyon
Member of Les Plus Beaux Villages de France
Tucked into a bend of the Seine at the foot of a chalk cliff, the village grew up around its château, held by the La Rochefoucauld family since 1669. A passage of 250 steps cut through the rock climbs to the medieval keep on the clifftop. In 1944 the château served as Rommel's headquarters; today visitors come for its kitchen garden and the river views.
