Veules-les-Roses
Member of Les Plus Beaux Villages de France
France's shortest river, the Veules, runs barely a kilometre through this Channel resort, feeding watercress beds and old mills before slipping through a gap in the chalk cliffs to a sand and pebble beach. From 1840 actors, painters and writers followed the actress Mademoiselle Anaïs here, and Victor Hugo came to stay with his friend Paul Meurice.
