Lavardin
Member of Les Plus Beaux Villages de France
Painters have been coming to Lavardin since around 1900, drawn to a village on the Loir crowned by the ruins of an 11th-century castle. Below it stand the church of Saint-Genest, begun in the 11th century and known for its frescoes, old houses and an ancient bridge over the river. Each year the village also hosts the 'world championships' of chouine, a historical card game.
