Right behind this town on the eastern shore of Lake Como, the Pioverna stream has carved the Orrido, a deep gorge you enter on wooden walkways fixed to the rock above a waterfall. Cotton mills made Bellano a small industrial centre in the 19th century; today it draws visitors with its lakeside promenade, its ferries and the novels of Andrea Vitali, who sets his stories here.
