Francesco della Rovere, elected Pope Sixtus IV in 1471, was born in 1414 in Pecorile, a hamlet of this Riviera town. The old centre grew along the Ghiare stream in a cove of the Riviera delle Palme, and a seafront promenade laid where the railway once ran links it to the modern beach district of the Piani di Celle.
