Corinaldo
Member of I Borghi più belli d'Italia
Razed by a papal army in 1360, Corinaldo was rebuilt from scratch seven years later, and its 912 metres of walls are among the finest in the Marche. Inside, the stepped street of La Piaggia climbs past a well tied to a comic local legend about polenta. Saint Maria Goretti was born here, the hills around grow Verdicchio, and each October the town throws a Halloween festival.
Highlights
- The walk around the walls, with Francesco di Giorgio Martini's Renaissance additions
- The polenta well halfway up La Piaggia's 104 steps
- A replica of the legendary fig-wood cannon in the town hall
- Teatro Carlo Goldoni, built between 1861 and 1869
- Verdicchio, the white wine of the surrounding hills
