Cusano Mutri

Cusano's name is thought to mean 'cup', and the old centre does sit on a hill in the middle of a bowl ringed by mountains, on the southern side of the Matese. Its people once lived from sheep and wool, weaving a cheap cloth called pannitti. The great earthquake of 1688 that flattened the surrounding villages left it standing, along with its Romanesque church of Santi Pietro e Paolo.
