Esanatoglia
Member of I Borghi più belli d'Italia
Aesa, a Roman settlement on the Esino, and Saint Anatolia, who gave the medieval castle its name, were joined only in 1862 to make Esanatoglia. The village lies in a valley between Monte Gemmo and Monte Corsegno, close to where the Esino rises. Inside its walls, medieval houses keep their 'three doors', one of them reserved for carrying out the dead.
Highlights
- Medieval houses with the door of the bride and groom and of the dead
- Parco delle Vene, between the village and the Esino springs
- Pieve dei Santi Anatolia e Marco, with a 13th-century stone portal
- Eremo di San Cataldo, a medieval tower on the facing mountain top
- Saffron, an old crop revived in the valley
