Sassoferrato
Member of I Borghi più belli d'Italia
Two big battles were fought here: in 295 BC Rome beat a coalition of Samnites, Gauls, Etruscans and Umbrians at Sentinum, and in 552 the Byzantines defeated the Goths of Totila below Monte Strega. The town sits on two levels where three streams meet, with the Borgo below and the Castello above, among the Apennines of the Marche. It gave its name to the Baroque painter Giovanni Battista Salvi.
