The name comes from inter aquas, 'among the waters', and the village rises on a hill where the Contra and Sant'Antonio valleys meet, below Monte Genzana in the Valle Peligna. A square 12th-century tower crowns the old castle quarter. At Easter crowds gather for the Madonna che vèle, when a statue of Mary runs to meet her risen son.

Highlights

  • The 12th-century square tower ringed by polygonal walls
  • Palazzo Trasmondi, refuge of the humanist Giovanni Quatrario, friend of Petrarch
  • Fontavecchia, the 1706 fountain that long supplied the whole village
  • Fuochi di Sant'Antonio, street bonfires and feasting on 17 January
  • Festa del Sole: the solstice sunrise over the Maiella from Monte Plaia
