Maratea
Member of I Borghi più belli d'Italia
The only stretch of Basilicata on the Tyrrhenian is about 32 km of cliffs, coves, caves and pebble beaches, with mountains dropping straight into the sea. Maratea's old Borgo was built in the Middle Ages behind Monte San Biagio, out of sight of Saracen raiders. On the summit above, a 22-metre statue of the Redeemer stands beside the basilica holding Saint Blaise's relics.
