Monforte d'Alba

Monforte d’Alba

Member of I Borghi più belli d'Italia

Early in the 11th century the whole community of Monforte, from countess to peasants, embraced its own heresy; around 1028 the Archbishop of Milan took the castle and most of the faithful chose the stake over recanting. Today the hilltop village is one of the eleven Barolo communes in the Langhe, and its natural amphitheatre hosts the Monfortinjazz festival each July.

Highlights

  • Auditorium Horszowski, a natural amphitheatre opened by the pianist in 1986
  • Monfortinjazz, the summer music festival held in July
  • Barolo wine, made in the vineyards around the village
  • The Via dei Catari, recalling the village's medieval heretics
  • The Castello di Perno, built in the Middle Ages by the Falletti family
