Castagnole delle Lanze

Barbera d'Asti, Dolcetto d'Alba and Moscato d'Asti all grow on the hills of Castagnole delle Lanze, at the edge of the Langhe, and wine has driven the local economy since vermouth and sparkling-wine firms opened here in the late 1800s. The 'Lanze' recalls the Lancia family, to which Bianca Lancia, last wife of Emperor Frederick II, belonged. In the upper town, a 19th-century tower once served as an observatory.
