Savignano Irpino sits on a saddle between two hills, the Tombola and the Calvario, looking down on the wooded Cervaro valley at the border with Apulia. Until 1963 it was called Savignano di Puglia, a sign of a place long caught between two regions. Through the Porta Grande lies the medieval core, overlooked by the Norman castle of the Guevara family.

Highlights

  • Castello de Guevara, a Norman castle now used as a conference centre
  • Valley views from the Belvedere della Tombola
  • Mother church of San Nicola e Sant'Anna, with a stone baptistery portal of 1514
  • The Ferrara plateau, with the lone church of Santa Sofia and a sulphur spring
  • Fontana Angelica, the town fountain built in 1912
