In 728 the Lombard king Liutprand handed Sutri to Pope Gregory II, a gift seen as the start of the Church's temporal power. The town sits on a narrow tufa hill ringed by ravines beside the Via Cassia, and across the road lie its ancient sights: an amphitheatre carved out of the rock, dozens of Etruscan tombs and a Mithraeum later turned into a church.

Highlights

  • The Roman amphitheatre, carved entirely out of the tufa (IT)
  • Madonna del Parto, a rock-cut Mithraeum later converted into a church
  • The Etruscan necropolis, with dozens of tombs cut into the rock
  • The feast of Sant'Antonio on 17 January, with a cavalcade through the old town
  • The Sagra del Fagiolo della Regina, around the patron's feast on 16 September
