Vipiteno – Sterzing
Member of I Borghi più belli d'Italia
Fifteen kilometres below the Brenner Pass, this Eisack valley town lived on transit trade and on silver from nearby valleys, which the Fugger of Augsburg sorted here. After a fire in 1443 the New Town was rebuilt with crenellated late-Gothic houses and covered bay windows, divided from the Old Town by the 46-metre Zwölferturm. Behind it rises the Rosskopf, with ski lifts and a long toboggan run.
Highlights
- The Zwölferturm, the 15th-century tower between Old Town and New Town
- The Gothic parish church of Unsere liebe Frau im Moos, just outside town
- Hans Multscher's Gothic altar, now shown in the Multscher Museum
- The late-Gothic Town Hall, with a Roman altar to Mithras in its courtyard
- A toboggan run of almost 10 km on the Rosskopf
