Bárcena Mayor
Member of Los Pueblos más Bonitos de España
At the end of the road up the Argoza valley, this mountain hamlet is the only inhabited place inside the Saja-Besaya natural park. Its stone houses with wooden balconies, most facing south to catch the sun, form a well-kept ensemble of Cantabrian mountain architecture, protected since 1979. Cars stay outside, so visitors walk the lanes, then sit down to cocido montañés or game.
