Sausage-making shaped Candelario: its tall stone houses have deep eaves and wooden galleries once used to cure meat, and half-doors called batipuertas guard their entrances. Channels of snowmelt, the regaderas, run down the steep streets. Oak and chestnut woods surround the village on the slopes of the Sierra de Béjar, part of a UNESCO biosphere reserve.

Highlights

  • Museo de la Casa Chacinera, in a traditional sausage-maker's house
  • Boda Típica, a traditional wedding staged on the second Sunday of August
  • Church of the Asunción, with a mudéjar coffered ceiling and Gothic rose window
  • Cruz del Herrerito viewpoint on a hill just south-west of the village
  • Oak and chestnut woods of the Sierras de Béjar y Francia biosphere reserve
