Count Fernán González liked to rest in this village on the Arlanza, and in 978 his son made it the seat of a vast domain, which is why Covarrubias calls itself the cradle of Castile. Its Torreón is the only Castilian fortress older than the 11th century still standing. In the collegiate church lies Kristina of Norway, a 13th-century princess who died far from home.
