Every street in Mondoñedo's old town leads to the cathedral square, and the cathedral itself is nicknamed the kneeling cathedral for its low, well-proportioned bulk. Until 1833 this small town in a sheltered valley was capital of one of Galicia's seven historic provinces. In front of the cathedral the marshal Pardo de Cela was beheaded, while his royal pardon was held up at the Pasatiempo bridge.
