The monastery of Santa María la Real gives Oseira its official name, Santa María a Real de Oseira. The parish belongs to San Cristóbal de Cea in the province of Ourense and is spread across some twenty-five small settlements, plus two abandoned hamlets; in the mid-19th century it counted about 1,700 inhabitants.
